As an Independent Contractor, it is your responsibility to track your shopper pay and pay taxes on that amount. The majority of shopping companies do not send out a W-2 or T4. Did you know you can claim portions of your mileage, computer, phone, electricity, and many more deductions if you work out of your home? As tax laws vary from state to state or province to province, it is important to review the tax laws and even seek the advice of an accountant. You could have deductions you didn't even know about! Beginning today, shoppers who completed shops for AboutFace™ since the beginning of 2008 can find out when they are due to be paid online and on-demand!

We are pleased to introduce our new shopper service, "When Will I Get Paid?" which was launched on our web site today. To view your shopper pay records online, all you need is your email address and zip code which are on file with AboutFace™.

When Will I Get Paid?

In addition to the shop and location name, base pay and bonus information and the dates the shops were completed and published, an estimated pay date will be displayed as well. If your pay date is past due, it shows up in red and you can email the payables department about it right from the site.

Accepting a job with a bonus attached can be a nice way to pad your paycheck. In addition, schedulers appreciate shoppers picking up those hard-to-schedule locations, especially when monthly deadlines draw near. But what happens when you think you have been offered a bonus, but the company fails to pay it?

Remember these tips to protect yourself:

Get confirmation of the bonus from the scheduler.
Be sure to keep all documentation/proof that the bonus was offered to you.
Even if a bonus is offered by phone, you should always ask for verification by email.

But keep in mind…

If you see a post on a job board (such as Volition) about a bonus on a shop and then accept the shop yourself through the company’s self-assign system, this does not necessarily mean you will get the bonus. It is highly possible that the shop you accepted was different from the shop posted with the bonus. If you don’t see the bonus when you go to accept the shop online, it should not be assumed a bonus is there without direct confirmation from the scheduler.

When dealing with bonus money - no matter what company you are shopping for - best practice is to GET IT IN WRITING!
